Computer users have been excited about the upcoming Jolibook, which runs on a new Linux-based netbook operation system called Jolicloud. The Jolibook was touted to be competitively priced, but now that the price has been announced, much of the former excitement is dying down.
The Jolibook will cost £279 ($444) when it hits the shelves – a high pricetag for any netbook, but especially high for one covered with cartoon drawings and running on a free operating system. Little is known about the final specs, but we do know that the Jolibook will sport an Atom N550 CPU and a 250GB hard drive. It seems to be an average system, especially when compared to Atom dual-core machines that can be purchased for about the same price
Jolibook might be the "official" Jolicloud netbook computer, but it's not the only way to get the new operating system. Jolicloud can be downloaded free of cost, and installed on any computer, even alongside Windows 7. The operating system has been designed with netbooks in mind, and its focus is on simplicity and ease of use. The OS could offer strong competition for Google's Chrome OS if it takes off.
